Family and Christmas

We spent a lovely weekend up North. Seeing my family again after all this time was amazing! It was just like old times standing in mam's kitchen, siblings all around and hot-dogs on the table! The only person missing of course was my mam.

It's coming up 10 years since she left us, but we all still miss her so much. The overwhelming pain at losing her has dulled over the years, but the memories and the longing to see her are still as fresh as ever. It makes me so sad that she never got to meet Katie, her grand-son Leon and ofcourse, her great grandson, Charlie. She would have gathered them up in her arms and showered them with kisses the way she used to do.

There has not been one single day when I have not thought of my mam, sometimes with sadness but more often with fondness. I guess that is how it will be for the rest of my life, but that fills me with comfort ; my mam will forever be in my heart.

Seeing Dad again was lovely. He is 5 years older of course, and his health has deteriorated of late. I feel so bad that I have left it so long, but I have promised to visit more often in the future. Anyway, the drive to Newcastle didn't take as long as we anticipated, so I have no excuse!

Dave met up with his boys and we all went Christmas shopping at the Metrocentre and then had a superb meal at a lovely Japanese restaurant.

Christmas Day was just the four of us (including Turkey-loving Maisie!) We opened our presents around the tree and had a delicious Christmas Dinner. Later we settled to watch Christmas TV, surrounded by chocolates and Baileys and a whole lot of love!... Perfect!

Ginger-Bread House, another Birthday and Christmas

Finally finished the ginger-bread house! It's very PINK and smells delicious and I am kind of pleased with it

Katie  is now nine years old! Wow...I don't know where the time goes. We are so proud of her; she is the sweetest, funniest and little girl!

Dave was working away for Katie's birthday, so she opened her presents and blew out her candles the day before, when Dave was around to see her excitement and eat birthday cake!It was that, or wait until the day after her birthday when Dave would be back home, but it was just a step too far to ask an excited and impatient almost nine year old to post-pone her birthday for one day!
Maisie's licking Katie's feet while she opens her pressies1

Happy Birthday Katie!

Me and my Girl!

On the actual day of her birthday, Katie and I took  ourselves off to Jaime's house for the day. It was lovely seeing gorgeous little Charlie and we all had fun at Space Kingdom in Clacton.

Things are much more quiet for us now that the Christmas Holidays are upon us.The last few weeks have been hectic, We have had our usual Science, French and Art classes at Moulsoe, piano lessons, Christmas Concert, Christmas Party, Cinderella at MK theatre, and this weekend we are off to Newcastle to see family before Christmas!

We will get back home Christmas Eve, and hopefully have a relaxing, quiet Christmas Day.

Ah...this is what a Science lesson looks like!
Happy Christmas!

Christmas is coming!

It's that time of year again : frosty mornings, robins in the garden and twinkling lights in the shops...
Christmas!

Now I have been known to say "Shovlins Love Christmas" and we do; however it is so incredibly busy in the shops already and I am starting to feel the pressure to find those perfect presents!
Milton Keynes Centre is pouring with people, the car-parks are over-flowing and my poor feet are aching! Katie and I have spent hours and walked miles whilst searching for Christmas Presents. Just when you find what you want it's not available in the right size, or the right colour, or the right price!I have been feeling so stressed and tired and frustrated. This is not what Christmas is about! So, I have vowed to shop online from now on (from the comfort of my sofa) Let's see how that goes!

The tree(s) are up and decorated and the ginger-bread cookies have been baked and are hanging from the branches of our "home-made" tree.
Last year our cheeky little dog Maisie helped herself to a couple of ginger-bread men hanging from the lower branches of the tree. We won't be making that mistake again! Must remember to hang sweet smelling delicious cookies from the upper branches.......Sorry Maisie!

Ginger Bread Cookie Tree
We still need to make our ginger-bread house. I have all the ingredients, including LOTS of pink candy. Katie and I were planning to get baking this weekend. However, a stinking cold (me) has put paid to that..... Just waiting for poor Katie to catch the cold now!

We were busy as usual last week. We had music and rehearsals for the Christmas Concert at Moulsoe, piano lessons in Bucks, Sublime Science Sessions where Katie mad slime and sherbet and other exploding stuff!! We visited "Hazard Alley" in MK which was really great!

Katie made sherbet...FIZZY sherbet!!

Katie attended her first Brownie meet in Great Denham and so far she is enthusiastic! She has promised to help more around the house, including cooking and walking Maisie, as part of her "helping hand" Brownie Promise.
Cute Brownie!
Piano lessons are going well. Katie seems to have a talent and she loves her teacher, Bethan. She loves practicing on her keyboard at home. Unfortuately, Dave like practicing too!

We are heading up to Newcastle just before Christmas. Dave is looking forward to seeing his boys and I am looking forward to seeing family I haven't seen in a long time. Let's hope this rotten cold is long gone by then!

London

Today I can't walk! Perhaps that's a slight exaggeration ; my legs, ankles and knees ache so bad this morning and I am walking around like a very old woman!
Yesterday, Katie and I spent the day in London with friends.... the whole day, from dawn 'til dark. We must have walked for miles and miles!

We took the train from Flitwick into London, which was an adventure in itself, as Katie is not used to using public transport and she sees it as real treat! Even the bus, and of course, The Tube, was a source of great enjoyment during the day!

We visited the National History Museum first. We had been there once before with the Cambridge HE group but we were eager to go back, as it was impossible to see everything in just one visit. We didn't get to see everything on this second visit either ; the children wanted to linger at the exhibits soaking everything up like the little sponges they are. Meanwhile, it seemed the many other visitors over-took us, squeezing past, on their tour of the museum. That's something I've noticed... everybody seems to be in such a rush, even at the museum where there is so much to linger over.

The museum was very busy and I noticed lots of groups of school children pouring over the exhibits but then being hurriedly moved on by their teachers to the next exhibit. Some kids weren't ready to move on and had to be called several times before reluctantly joining their class.

That's the beauty of HE... we didn't have or need a time-table, we didn't even know the time! We just wandered wherever the kids led us and made slow but thoroughly enjoyable progress. No rushing here. We almost forgot to stop for lunch, we were enjoying the museum so much! So, we had a late (and delicious) lunch in a quaint French patisserie, when the hunger-pains finally got the better of us!

After lunch we made our way to Kensington, where the girls played in the park, chasing squirrels across the grass which was littered with autumn leaves. I was glad we'd wrapped up warm! The park, like the rest of the city centre, was thronging with people, joggers and dog-walkers. The latter delighted Katie, what with her being such a dog-lover! As always, she recognised all the different breeds and she was delighted to pet lots of friendly dogs. She even threw a ball or two for a beautiful black lab named Freya. Freya had boundless energy.... she would have played with Katie all day had she been allowed!

Exploring Hyde Park

It grew colder and as the sun set, we jumped on a big red bus and made our way to Trafalgar Square, the fountains, monuments, the majestic lions, shopping and the Christmas Lights!

There were people everywhere! The lights were absolutely beautiful and in the theme of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" which was especially lovely, as this is the song Katie has been rehearsing for her Christmas Concert at Moulsoe!

What with the sparkling lights and festive music, the crowds of people wrapped up warm for winter, and the shops filled with the sights and sounds of the season, for the first time this year I felt "Christmassy" (and it's only November yet!)

Trafalgar Square

We took the girls to Hamley's toy shop and spent an age looking and touching and "oohing and aahhing!" I even made a start on my Christmas shopping!
Katie had money to spend too, and she treated herself  to a model family of wolves (no surprises there then!)

Later, around 7ish, we went to Nando's for dinner and filled our empty stomachs again.

The day just flew over, and by the time we'd caught the Tube back to St Pancras, jumped on the train and then driven from the station to home, it was nigh on 11pm!
We had been out and about for almost 14 hours!! Ah, that's why my legs don't feel like mine this morning!!

Halloween Disco Diva!

Katie and I went to a Halloween Disco held at the Forest Centre in nearby Marston Vale. Now Katie doesn't do dancing, so she wasn't too impressed when we first arrived to pounding music and flashing lights. On top of that, we didn't know anyone there, not that it seemed to bother Katie too much. The DJ asked all the kids to the front for competitions and Katie reluctantly made her way onto the dance floor. The music started...... and suddenly Katie came to life! Who knew we had such a disco-diva in our midst?!! You know, Katie never ceases to amaze me ; she is full of lovely surprises!

The disco was great, (which is more then could be said for the buffet!) and Katie danced for two hours solid! She came away with 2 certificates for her dancing efforts and was chuffed to bits! Unfortunately, she couldn't walk the next day!!

Katie dancing her heart out!

Katie's loving her "lessons" at Moulsoe Hall right now. She particularly enjoys the Music and Recorders on Mondays although she has confessed to being nervous about performing "live" at Christmas! She is also doing Science, Art and French at Moulsoe but I suspect she enjoys the play-time in the park afterwards, more than the lessons!

We had planned to go out tonight to watch the Fireworks in Milton Keynes but it has rained solid for days and the thought of wading through muddy fields in freezing temps put us off. And, our house is so warm and cosy, it's hard leaving it when it's so wintery (is that a word?) outside! So we stayed home and wrote letters to friends, watched TV and Dave and Katie played on the PC and then the Wii. They finished off with Dominoes. No prizes for guessing who won!

Dave's still working hard. He must be doing something right as his contract has been extended until Christmas. Katie and I miss him when he's away from home, but we appreciate him all the more when he's home. And I don't tell him enough, but I really do appreciate everything he does for our family. He is a gem.x

Matilda Birthday surprise!

I have had a lovely weekend in London with my beautiful daughter Jaime; that was my surprise birthday present!

It is such a long time since we spent time together, just the two of us, so it was extra special!
Our hotel was perfect, the wine and food delicious, and the best bit was the show...... Matilda, at the Cambridge Theatre in Convent Garden.
The show was fantastic! We all love Roald Dahl anyway, and the actors portrayed the story of Matilda beautifully.
Ofcourse, there was time for shopping in London and we didn't come back empty handed! The shops, restaurants and bars were heaving; the streets thronging with people. If there  is a recession, it was difficult to see it in London!

I had the most enjoyable weekend (thankyou Jaime,x) but it was exhausting! Maybe it's just my age!lol.

Happy Birthday Charlie!!

Today we headed off  to Clacton to celebrate Charlie's first birthday. His official birthday is actually tomorrow but it made sense to have his party today, Sunday, when folk are off work.

The party was great fun, lots of noise,  new toys, a Thomas the Tank Engine cake and a huge birthday balloon! I think Charlie liked being the centre of attention and playing with his baby friends, cousins and Aunty Katie! However, I think he was a little over-whelmed and just a little bit tired by the time it came to blowing out the birthday candle (as you can see from the pic!)

Happy 1st Birthday Charlie!

Another Birthday!

The last few days have been lovely! Jaime, Tony and Charlie came to stay. Charlie is 11 months old now and he is just soooo cuddly cute!

We all went to Gulliver's Land on Saturday. Charlie loved the rides; the faster and higher he went, the more he loved it! Katie was very brave; she rode the roller coasters, rides she had previously refused to try. I think it was down to Jaime encouraging her, and cuddling her in tightly as the train hurtled around the track! Afterwards we ate at Nando's (fast becoming our favourite place to eat).

Gulliver's Land was so good we planned to return the next day. However the heavens opened all day Sunday, so we went swimming at Oasis instead.
Charlie absolutely loved the water! He is such a lovely baby. He embraces all new experiences with a huge smile!

Today was my birthday. I don't think it's necessary to mention here just how old I am today, suffice to say I am now officially, according to Dave, "middle-aged"!!!

It was a bonus spending my birthday with my gorgeous family. I received some lovely presents from Dave and Katie, and Jaime is treating me to a weekend in London next month. We have tickets to see "Matilda. Lucky me!

Jaime, Tony and Charlie went home this afternoon and as usual I feel so sad. I love it when family come to stay, but I hate it when it's time for them to go; the house suddenly seems too big and so quiet.

A Nando Birthday!

We celebrated Dave's "special" birthday with a scrumptious meal at Nando's.

Dave loved his birthday presents which included a new top, cigars, aftershave, PC games, a new gold ring (from me)  and a disgusting amount of chocolate!!

Katie helped blow out the candles and shared in making a wish. Then we tucked into cake!

Kat's Big Brother

Last weekend Stephen, Dave's youngest son and Katie's lovely big brother, joined us for the weekend. He'd come all the way from Newcastle to Bedford.
Katie hadn't seen her brother in a while and she was genuinely thrilled to be spending time with him again. Stephen is well into his twenties, but still a big kid at heart which suits Katie just fine!

The weekend flew by too quickly, but they managed to watch some favourite films, play on the x-box, go swimming and on Sunday we all had a lovely meal at Frankie & Benny's restaurant in Milton Keynes.

Dave left for work early Monday morning and we drove Stephen to the train station shortly after. Katie was unusually quiet in the car driving back home, staring silently out of the window; she was missing her brother. It's times like these when I wish we lived nearer to family.

We've managed to do some school work the last couple of days, despite Katie coming down with a cold. We have finally finished our year 4 Maths Books and have started year 5. We also finished Galore Park Science. Katie really enjoys  science and she's looking forward to the science sessions starting soon with our HE group. Galore Park English has not proved so popular but I am not too concerned. Katie is reading constantly, she is writing much more, and she is keeping her blog updated regularly. Actually, she updates more regularly than me!

Katie has really taken to the recorder. I bought her a music book along with the recorder which she has been studying. Her lessons begin Monday but already she has taught herself a couple of songs and she is even reading the music! She'll be doing a half hour Recorders and a half hour singing every Monday, leading up to a Christmas Concert in December. Now this will be interesting as Katie doesn't do singing...not in our presence anyway! I can imagine Dave and I having to "hide" at the back of the audience at the Christmas Concert!!

We have been birthday pressie shopping in MK. Dave has a special birthday coming up, the kind of birthday that requires a special pressie , not just the customary box of Maltesers! The truth is, Dave would be more than happy with just a box of chocolates, but Katie and I have found him a special gift ; a gift he can keep forever. I can't say what it is right now just in case he takes a peep at this blog and spoils the surprise!

Not Back to School!!

Katie and I joined our friends and a bunch of lovely HE families at Campbell Park today, for the  Not Back to School Picnic. The weather stayed fair and the children played amongst the trees and hid in the maze. It was so good to talk to like-minded parents, and looking back, I wonder how we managed in Cyprus all those years without the company and support of other HE people.

We would have stayed out longer but we had to rush back home to meet the electrician. My very expensive, and only just out of it's warranty, washing machine blew a fuse last week and managed to blow the electrics in the utility room too!

We have Steven coming to stay at the weekend and I'm hoping the washing machine is fixed by then, or else the washing will be meeting him at the door!

Funny Old Week

It's been a funny old week. It was one of those weeks full of randomness...I felt like we weren't really doing much, but looking back we actually did lots.

Firstly it was a strange week because Dave wasn't around. He managed to bag himself a job, travelling around the south-west, chatting to random people and drinking lots of tea! On a serious note, I am so proud of him.... He "retired" a few years back, but has had a few temporary contracts since then, which has helped greatly with paying the rent! I think he likes working too, as long as its short term. Keeps his brain active!

Kat and I have done lots of shopping, especially for the home. The house is lovely, but fairly bland(lots of magnolia walls) so we have been looking for pictures and ornaments and furniture to make it more homely.

We have built flat-packed storage cubes and bed-side cabinets, and re-arranged rooms. Our home is starting to take shape. Kat knows the difference between a phillips and a flat-head and is a dab hand with a screw-driver!

Kat had her last guitar lesson at the Buszy this week. She has enjoyed the lessons so much, we have promised her a guitar of her own, and I hope to find a tutor locally so she can continue with her lessons.

Pets at Home were having a pet handling session at the store in MK. We saw it advertised a month ago, put it in the diary, and Katie has been waiting with anticipation for the day to arrive. She is especially interested in guinea-pigs. However, she was slightly disappointed as she didn't get to hold the guinea-pig for as long as she would have liked. We spent ages in the store as Kat showed me around the small pets section and I was amazed at her knowledge of guinea-pigs, their diet, hutches, temperaments etc. She has done a lot of research!

We managed to get through our "schooly" books. Sadly, I have to get them out a few times a week, for my own benefit really. Kat dutifully, if somewhat reluctantly, does the maths, answers the questions, fills in the blanks...... and then gets on with some real learning, researching the things that interest her.

So all in all, a busy and productive week. Wonder what next week holds?

Kat...doing what she does best...
......having fun!

One Year On.....

Oh my, it's been a year!
We are still in the same country, but a different county.

So, here I am, attempting my blogging again. Now I have blogged in the past (about our HE journey with Kat and our four year long vacation to Cyprus!) but I have to admit to being a "sporadic" blogger. So, a promise to myself....I promise to blog regularly and not be a lazy so-and-so!

So, we find ourselves in a new house, a new county (Bedfordshire) and a new adventure! Already we have found a thriving Home-ed community, and made some lovely friends.

We are so lucky to live in a beautiful, historic and busy part of the country. There are some lovely home-edders here that go out of their way to provide lots of opportunities to HE children, and on top of that there is just so much to do here.... Beautiful parks, leisure facilities, theatres, galleries and museums. We are spoiled for choice!

Last week I spent a lovely a day with both my beautiful daughters.... Kat, now aged 8, and Jaime aged 26!

Kat and I drove the 2 and a half hours to Jaime's house and then another hour and a half to the hospital, as Jaime is having an operation soon and had an appointment with her surgeon.

We got to spend time with Charlie, our first and only grandchild. He is 10 months old now and just the cutest, most cuddly baby! We took him a book, one of Kat's favourites, The Gruffalo. It was one of those books with the sound effects, and Charlie got straight into it! He is growing so quickly, and I feel bad that I haven't seen a lot of him lately. So, another promise to myself: I will make more of an effort to see Jaime and Tony and Cheeky Charlie regularly.

Then, Kat and I drove all the way home again. That's a 6am start, and 8 hours driving. No wonder we were both exhausted at the end of it. But, it was a lovely day, spent with family.

Cheeky Charlie!
